Department: EnglishCollege Prep English 1 – 0171T Grades: 9 Length: 2 Semesters Credits: 1 Prerequisite: None Recommendation: None Description: CP English 1 is designed for students who possess the Basic English skills. The first semester concentrates on development of writing skills, including organization patterns of narrative, descriptive, comparison/contrast, and expository writing. Language studies include review of grammar skills, usage, and editing. Literature studies include short stories and plays. In the second semester, emphasis is placed on the study of several genres of literature: the novel, epic poetry, and drama and satire. Students will apply writing skills learned in the first semester to literature-based assignments, such as plot analysis, character study, and thematic responses. Vocabulary will be drawn from the literacy selection. Proofreading and editing skills will be emphasized. College Prep. English 1 Honors – 0167T Grades: 9 Length: 2 Semesters Credits: Prerequisite: Admission to Honors program Recommendation: Language Arts, GPA of an A, and the recommendation of the 8th grade English teacher Description: English 1 Honors is designed for students who meet the established criteria. Students will undertake in-depth studies in both composition and literature. They will be expected to think critically, make rational decisions, and solve problems. Students work at an accelerated pace in the following areas: organizational patterns of the four specific forms of paragraph writing, informative, argumentative, and persuasive essays, short story elements, novels and plays. Advanced concepts of grammar will be explored. The second semester emphasizes the study of all forms of literature including novels, epic, world mythology, satire, and dramas. Students will apply those writing skills learned in the first semester to literature-based assignments, such as comparing and contrasting characters, plots, and themes; research involving historical circumstances affecting the behavior of the character; and personal responses to themes, conflicts, and symbolism. Vocabulary will be selected from the literature. Students will be expected to use vocabulary words in speaking and writing. College Prep. English 2 students will develop an awareness of the power of written communication as they refine their composition skills through writing and editing multi-paragraph essays.
